a quiet little bit of water in the garden

we finally found a vendor for some of our very favorite limestone fountains, and i couldn’t be happier about it. i’ve had my eye on this particular style for a while because they have everything i love in a garden piece—they’re simple, beautiful, natural, and look like they could have been sitting there for years.

i love adding water to a landscape, but i don’t necessarily want the water feature to be the loudest thing in the garden. sometimes a simple limestone fountain with water quietly bubbling or spilling over the edge is all you need. you hear it before you really notice it, and i think there’s something pretty wonderful about that.

limestone also works so well with the natural materials we tend to use in our landscape designs. pair it with an irregular bluestone patio, an eden stone wall, gravel, weathered brick, or loose, layered plantings, and it just settles in. nothing feels too new or too perfect. and as the limestone ages and weathers, it only gets prettier.

i especially love the idea of tucking one of these fountains into the garden rather than putting it front and center. maybe it sits at the end of a little gravel path, peeks out from behind ornamental grasses and perennials, or is surrounded by a mix of shrubs and groundcovers. it becomes something you discover as you move through the landscape.

water can also change the feeling of an outdoor living space in a way that very few other elements can. the sound softens everything around it. it can make a small garden seating area feel more private, bring movement to a quiet corner of the yard, and of course, attract birds—which is always a good thing in my book.

when we’re working on landscape design and construction in naperville, aurora, plainfield, yorkville, batavia, geneva, glen ellyn, wheaton, downers grove, lisle, and throughout the western suburbs of chicago, i’m always looking for pieces that feel appropriate to the house and the land around it. i don’t want something in a garden simply because it fills a space. i want it to add a little character, texture, age, or feeling.

these limestone fountains do exactly that. they’re beautiful without being fancy, interesting without demanding attention, and natural enough to feel at home in everything from a wooded backyard to a more structured garden.

sometimes the simplest additions end up being the ones that bring the most life to a landscape.
