another rain day in the garden

another rain day here in the western suburbs of chicago. while the gardens, trees, and newly installed plantings are probably pretty happy about it, our construction schedule is a little less enthusiastic. fall is always a busy season for us, and unfortunately, a string of rainy days can quickly push everything back.

landscape construction is very much at the mercy of mother nature. when the ground is saturated, there are simply some things that need to wait. bringing heavy equipment onto wet soil can create compaction and damage, excavation becomes messy, and trying to rush stonework, patios, retaining walls, and other landscape construction rarely leads to the kind of finished work we want to leave behind. sometimes the best thing we can do for a project is stay off of it for a day or two and let the ground dry.

we are incredibly grateful for the patience and understanding of our clients. whether we are working on a natural stone patio in naperville, a new planting design in geneva, a retaining wall in glen ellyn, or a complete backyard landscape renovation somewhere in aurora, plainfield, yorkville, batavia, wheaton, downers grove, or lisle, we want to do the work right—not simply get it done.

once the rain moves out, we’ll be back to doing what we love: laying natural stone and bluestone patios, building walkways and retaining walls, setting outcropping stone, installing trees, shrubs, grasses, and perennials, and watching another landscape design slowly become a real garden.

working outside has a way of reminding us that we’re not completely in charge. there are schedules and plans and carefully organized crews, but then there is the weather. for today, mother nature gets the job site. tomorrow—or whenever she’s finished—we’ll pick up where we left off.
