big trees, bluestone, and a shady backyard in glen ellyn
we’re loving spending time in the wooded backyard of our glen ellyn clients this week. there’s something really special about working within an established landscape like this one, where mature trees already create a canopy overhead and the property has its own quiet, tucked-away feeling. and after plenty of hot summer days, our crew is definitely appreciating all of that shade!
we’re installing some seriously large plant material on this project, including giant evergreens and deciduous trees that immediately change the way the backyard feels. there’s definitely something to be said for patience in a garden, but sometimes instant gratification is pretty wonderful too. these trees already have size, presence, and character, so instead of waiting years for the landscape to fill in, our clients get to experience that sense of enclosure and maturity right away. as the new trees settle in and grow alongside the existing woods, the whole landscape will continue to feel more natural and established.
we’re also creating two small seating areas using irregular bluestone. i love incorporating little destinations like these into a landscape—places that give you a reason to wander out into the yard, sit under the trees, have a cup of coffee, or just be still for a while. irregular natural stone feels especially appropriate here because it doesn’t compete with the wooded surroundings. it feels relaxed and imperfect and like it belongs.
