bringing mid-century modern outdoor living to life in plainfield
i met with a couple in plainfield recently and instantly knew this one was going to be fun. they’ve got a mid-century modern home and a ton of ideas for their outdoor living space—lots of creativity, color, and personality in the best way. we started digging into patio design ideas and how they really want to use the space day-to-day, from hanging out as a family to entertaining, and even talked through whether it makes sense to break things up into more defined “rooms” within the overall layout.
as we worked through the landscape design, it became clear that function was just as important as style. creating intentional zones within the patio design allows for a more usable and comfortable outdoor living space, especially for a growing family. this is something i see often in projects throughout plainfield, naperville, aurora, batavia, geneva, glen ellyn, wheaton, downers grove, lisle, and the western suburbs of chicago—homeowners want spaces that feel good but also work for real life.
one of my favorite parts of the conversation was planning out a wildflower area that still has some structure to it—kind of that “controlled chaos” look that feels natural but intentional at the same time. blending softer, more natural planting with clean lines is one of my favorite ways to create contrast in a custom landscape design. it gives you that relaxed feel without looking overgrown or unplanned, which is key in more modern landscape installation styles.
with everything they have in mind, this will be a phased landscape construction project so we can build it out in a way that makes sense budget-wise while still working toward the full vision. phased projects are often the best approach for larger outdoor living transformations, allowing each element—from hardscape to planting—to be done thoughtfully and with purpose.
we’re also reworking the front yard a bit—thinking a more linear sidewalk to better match the architecture and create a clean, modern entrance. pairing that with layered plantings will bring in color, texture, and seasonal interest, helping tie the entire landscape design together from front to back.
projects like this are exactly why i love working in landscape design and landscape construction across the western suburbs of chicago. i could feel their excitement the whole time, and i already know this is going to turn into a space their whole family will actually use and enjoy every day.
