understanding your landscape budget before design begins

one of the biggest questions i get from homeowners across naperville, aurora, plainfield, yorkville, batavia, geneva, glen ellyn, wheaton, downers grove, lisle, and the western suburbs of chicago is about budget—and i totally get it. landscape design and construction can feel like a big unknown if you haven’t gone through the process before. most people don’t have a clear sense of what plantings, patios, walkways, or outdoor living spaces actually cost, so it can be hard to know where to even begin.

that’s why i like to spend time early on having real conversations about budget. before i ever dive into a detailed landscape design, we walk through your wish list together. maybe you’re dreaming about a new patio, layered plantings, a fire pit, or a full outdoor living space. from there, i can give you a general range of costs based on similar landscape construction projects i’ve done throughout the western suburbs of chicago. this helps us quickly figure out what’s realistic and where we might want to adjust.

sometimes that means simplifying certain elements, and sometimes it means phasing the project out over time. a lot of my clients in naperville, geneva, and wheaton choose to break their landscape installation into 2 to 3 stages. we might start with the patio and structural hardscape features, then come back later for additional plantings or finishing touches. this approach makes high-quality landscape construction more manageable while still working toward the full vision.

i always think about it from the homeowner’s perspective too. when i’m getting estimates for my own home, i don’t always know what’s reasonable either. that’s exactly why i believe in being transparent about pricing upfront. having those conversations early in the landscape design process helps make sure we’re aligned before investing time and energy into a plan.

at the end of the day, my goal is to create a landscape design that actually works for you—not just something that looks beautiful on paper. by talking through budget first, we can build a plan that fits your lifestyle, your priorities, and your investment level, whether you’re in plainfield, downers grove, lisle, or anywhere in the surrounding western suburbs of chicago. it keeps the process grounded, collaborative, and ultimately a whole lot more enjoyable.
