a day in the life of dawn at rooted outdoor living

no two days are ever the same, and that's one of the things i love most about what i do. every morning brings a new project, a new conversation, and a new opportunity to create an outdoor space that will become part of someone's home for years to come. while every day looks a little different, they all begin with the same excitement for helping people connect with nature through thoughtful landscape design.

many mornings start early at my homestead. before i head out for the day, i spend time taking care of my animals and enjoying the quiet moments that come with living close to nature. it's a part of my routine that keeps me grounded and reminds me why i started rooted outdoor living in the first place. on some days, plant deliveries arrive first thing in the morning, and it's always exciting to see healthy trees, shrubs, perennials, and ornamental grasses ready to become part of someone's new landscape.

after that, i'm usually on the road meeting with clients throughout naperville, aurora, plainfield, yorkville, batavia, geneva, glen ellyn, wheaton, downers grove, lisle, and the western suburbs of chicago. some meetings are with homeowners who are seeing their landscape design for the first time, while others are the beginning of a brand-new project. one of my favorite parts of the job is simply listening. every client has a different vision for how they want to use their outdoor space, and understanding their goals is the foundation of creating a landscape that truly feels personal.

once i'm back at my desk, the creative part of the day begins. this is where ideas start coming together through landscape plans, hand sketches, and digital renderings. i spend a lot of time thinking about how each home is unique and what design will complement its architecture, surroundings, and the way the family lives. i carefully consider everything from plant selection and seasonal color to texture, natural stone, patios, walkways, and outdoor gathering spaces. every decision is intentional because i want each landscape to feel like it has always belonged there.

one of the things i enjoy most about landscape design is balancing creativity with function. i love imagining how a family will use their patio on a summer evening, where children might explore the garden, or how a carefully placed tree will provide shade for years to come. every project is different, and that's what keeps this work exciting. no two clients are the same, no two properties are the same, and every design is an opportunity to create something original.

by the end of the day, i'm often already thinking about tomorrow's projects. whether i'm reviewing designs, checking on installations, planning the next client meeting, or preparing for another plant delivery, i'm constantly inspired by the opportunity to create meaningful outdoor spaces. rooted outdoor living has grown because of the incredible people who trust us with their homes, and i never take that responsibility for granted.

at the heart of it all, my goal is simple: to create landscapes that feel welcoming, timeless, and deeply connected to the people who live there. every day brings new challenges and new ideas, and i wouldn't have it any other way.
