building a backyard where memories will be made

there are some projects that stay with you long before they're finished, and this is one of them. every time i walk onto this property, i find myself imagining what it will look like a year from now—not just the finished patio or the beautiful gardens, but the memories that will fill the space. that's one of the reasons i love what i do. i'm not simply designing landscapes; i'm helping create the places where families spend some of the best moments of their lives.

this project is especially exciting because it's centered around bringing people together. we're building a custom patio that will surround a brand-new pool, creating plenty of space for relaxing, entertaining, and soaking up summer. we're also installing a beautiful outdoor fireplace where i can already picture the family gathering after a long day of swimming, talking late into the evening while the kids roast marshmallows and laugh with their friends. just steps away, the outdoor kitchen will make it easy to host everything from casual weeknight dinners to birthday parties, graduation celebrations, and fourth of july cookouts without ever leaving the backyard.

one of my favorite parts of every project is choosing the plants. i spend a lot of time thinking about how they will look together, how they'll change with the seasons, and how they'll make people feel when they walk through the space. for this home, we're layering colorful perennials, ornamental grasses, flowering shrubs, and carefully selected trees to soften the hardscape and create a landscape that feels warm, welcoming, and full of life. i always want our plantings to look like they've naturally belonged there, making the backyard feel peaceful and connected to its surroundings.

i've always believed that the best landscapes aren't the ones with the biggest patios or the most expensive features. they're the ones that become part of a family's everyday life. they're where kids run barefoot through the yard after spending hours in the pool, where parents watch from the patio with a smile, where neighbors stop by unexpectedly, and where everyone seems to linger just a little longer because no one is quite ready for the evening to end.

that's what makes projects like this so meaningful to me. i know that years from now, this family probably won't remember every plant we installed or every paver we carefully placed. what they'll remember are the birthday parties, summer barbecues, evenings by the fire, holiday gatherings, and countless afternoons spent outside together. knowing that our work becomes the backdrop for those memories is something i'll never take for granted.

i feel incredibly fortunate that homeowners continue to trust rooted outdoor living with spaces that mean so much to them. whether we're designing landscapes in naperville, aurora, plainfield, yorkville, batavia, geneva, glen ellyn, wheaton, downers grove, lisle, or throughout the western suburbs of chicago, every project starts with the same goal: creating an outdoor space that feels like home.

i'm so excited to watch this backyard come to life over the next several weeks. right now, it's a construction site filled with possibilities, but before long it will be a place filled with laughter, conversations, celebrations, and memories. and for me, that's what landscape design has always been about.
