finding rare plants and specimen plantings in the western suburbs of chicago

one of my favorite parts of landscape design in the western suburbs of chicago is getting to work with clients who truly love plants—and every once in a while, i get a client who takes that love to a whole different level. this upcoming landscape design project in western springs is exactly that. while many of my clients in naperville, aurora, plainfield, yorkville, batavia, geneva, glen ellyn, wheaton, downers grove, and lisle want beautiful, low-maintenance landscape installation, this client is an avid gardener who appreciates just about anything that grows leaves or flowers.

but what really lights her up is specimen plantings. not just your everyday shrubs and perennials, but those standout, one-of-a-kind plants that feel like little treasures tucked into the landscape. the kind of plants that make you stop, look twice, and maybe even ask, “what is that?” designing a landscape around those moments is such a fun and creative challenge, especially when blending them into a cohesive outdoor space that still feels natural and balanced.

for all of our landscape construction and planting projects, we rely heavily on Hinsdale Nurseries. they’re a trusted local nursery and consistently provide a huge variety of high-quality plant material that forms the backbone of our designs. having that reliability is huge when we’re building out full landscape installations across the western suburbs of chicago, whether we’re working in wheaton, glen ellyn, or downers grove.

but when a design calls for something a little more unique, that’s when the real treasure hunt begins. there are so many great chicagoland nurseries that specialize in growing plants that are a little different, a little quirky, and sometimes even a little “wonky” in the best way. from unusual ornamental trees to rare shrubs and unexpected perennials, we’re lucky to have access to growers who take pride in offering something beyond the standard plant palette.

i genuinely love the process of tracking down these special pieces. it might mean visiting multiple nurseries, asking a lot of questions, or keeping an eye out for that one perfect plant that fits just right in the design. and when we find it, it always feels worth it. those rare additions bring personality and depth to a landscape, especially in areas like naperville, aurora, plainfield, and yorkville where homeowners are looking to elevate their outdoor spaces.

at the end of the day, great landscape design and construction isn’t just about filling beds with plants—it’s about creating a space that feels personal, layered, and alive. mixing dependable, high-quality plantings with unique specimen pieces allows us to build landscapes that feel established but also a little unexpected. and for clients who truly appreciate plants, those details make all the difference.
