spring rain delays and what they mean for your landscape project

spring in the western suburbs of chicago always feels like the official kickoff to landscape design and construction season. across naperville, aurora, plainfield, yorkville, batavia, geneva, glen ellyn, wheaton, downers grove, and lisle, everyone is ready to get outside again and start transforming their outdoor spaces. it’s one of my favorite times of year—there’s so much excitement around fresh starts, new plantings, and finally bringing those landscape plans to life.

but if you’ve lived here long enough, you know spring weather doesn’t always cooperate. we can get stretches of rain followed by a few dry days that still leave the ground muddy and saturated. while it might not seem like a big deal, those conditions can really affect landscape installation. everything from grading to hardscape installation relies on stable, workable soil, and rushing that process can impact the quality and longevity of your project.

that’s usually when i send out a quick note to clients to keep everyone in the loop. something along the lines of: we’ve had a few delays due to unforeseen circumstances and weather delays, and while your project is scheduled to start soon, i’ll reach out as we get closer with a more accurate timeframe. i always want to be upfront—construction comes with unknowns, especially in the spring, and i never want to compromise the integrity of your outdoor space just to stay on a date on the calendar.

the way i see it, it’s always better to take a breath, let things dry out properly, and do it right the first time. whether we’re installing patios, walkways, planting beds, or full outdoor living spaces, every step builds on the last. solid prep work and thoughtful timing make all the difference in how everything looks and performs long-term.

the good news is, once we get those warmer, drier stretches, things move quickly again. crews get into a rhythm, projects start rolling, and those muddy spring days turn into beautiful, finished landscapes you can actually enjoy. and honestly, there’s something about taking these little delays in stride—moving forward with grace and a happy heart—that makes the finished space feel even more worth it.

so if you’re planning a landscape design or construction project in naperville, aurora, plainfield, yorkville, batavia, geneva, glen ellyn, wheaton, downers grove, or lisle, just know a little patience in the spring goes a long way. we’re just as excited as you are to get started, and we’re always working behind the scenes to make sure your project is done thoughtfully, beautifully, and built to last.
