a quiet place to sit and breathe

i love the idea of creating a little meditation space right in your own backyard. you don’t need a huge yard or a complicated outdoor living area to have a place where you can slow down and get away from the noise for a little while. sometimes a quiet corner surrounded by plants is all you need. it might be a small patio tucked into the garden, a simple bench under a tree, or even a comfortable chair where you can sit in the morning and listen to the birds.

when we’re designing a landscape, we like to think about how a space will feel, not just how it will look. where will the sun be in the morning? what will you see when you sit down? can we create a little privacy from the neighbors? are there trees, shrubs, or perennials we can use to make the space feel more secluded and connected to nature? these are the little details that can turn an ordinary corner of a backyard into somewhere you actually want to spend time.

natural materials work especially well in these spaces. a simple stone path, a few large boulders, a small paver patio, or even a weathered bench can give a meditation space a sense of place without making it feel overly designed. i love using plants to create that feeling of being tucked into the landscape. trees can provide shade and a sense of enclosure, while layers of shrubs and perennials can soften the edges and make the space feel more private.

and it doesn’t have to be a formal meditation space, either. maybe it’s where you drink your coffee in the morning, read a book, stretch, journal, or just sit quietly for ten minutes. the point is really to create a reason to step outside. i think our outdoor spaces can have a surprisingly big effect on how we feel, and having a comfortable place to pause can be just as valuable as having a beautiful patio for entertaining.

this is one of the reasons i love landscape design so much. we’re not just choosing plants and materials and figuring out where everything should go. we’re thinking about how people will live in the space. a good backyard landscape should have places for gathering, places for playing, and sometimes places for doing absolutely nothing. those quiet spaces can be some of the most meaningful parts of a garden.

whether it’s a small meditation garden, a tucked-away seating area, or a complete backyard transformation, we love creating outdoor spaces that feel natural, comfortable, and connected to the landscape. we design and build thoughtful gardens, patios, planting beds, walkways, and outdoor living spaces throughout naperville, aurora, plainfield, yorkville, batavia, geneva, glen ellyn, wheaton, downers grove, lisle, and the western suburbs of chicago.

sometimes the best part of a backyard isn’t the space where everyone gathers. it’s the little corner where you can sit quietly, take a breath, and enjoy being outside.
