living with dogs definitely changes the way you think about your outdoor space. your backyard isn’t just a place to look at from the kitchen window—it’s a place where your dogs run, explore, dig, roll around, chase squirrels, and generally make themselves at home. we love designing landscapes that are beautiful for people but also practical for dogs and the way families actually use their yards. when we’re working on a landscape design for a family with dogs, we think about how the space will function day to day. durable lawn areas can give dogs room to run and play, while paths and open areas can create natural routes through the yard. shade is important, too, especially during the warmer months, and sometimes a strategically placed tree or planting bed can create a cooler, more comfortable spot to hang out. fencing and gates are also things we think about early in the design process so they feel like part of the landscape rather than something added as an afterthought.

plant selection can be another important consideration. some plants simply hold up better to dogs running through a garden than others, and it’s worth thinking about where plants are placed based on how your dogs move through the yard. we don’t want to design a beautiful planting bed only to discover that it sits directly in the middle of the path your dog takes every time they go outside. good landscape design considers those little patterns of everyday life and works with them rather than against them. we also think about the hardscape. a well-designed patio, walkway, or stepping-stone path can help create durable surfaces between the house, lawn, and other parts of the yard. thoughtful grading and drainage are important, too, particularly in a landscape that gets a lot of traffic. the goal is to create an outdoor space that can handle real life without feeling overly structured or sacrificing the natural look and feel of the landscape.
