why we love the flexibility of pavers

we’re starting a driveway paver project this week, and this one is a great example of why we love working with pavers so much. the homeowners recently added a new garage, so we’re adding additional pavers to create a clean, functional connection from the existing driveway to the new garage. we’re also resetting some of the existing pavers that have settled over time.

one of the things i really appreciate about pavers is their flexibility. landscapes and properties change over time, and it’s nice to use materials that can change with them. if a paver driveway settles, individual pavers can be lifted, the base can be adjusted, and the pavers can be put right back in place. you don’t have to tear out an entire driveway just because a small section needs some attention.

the same flexibility is especially helpful when homeowners make changes to their property. in this case, adding a new garage meant we could simply extend the existing paver driveway and create the access that was needed. when the new pavers are installed thoughtfully and the colors and pattern are matched well, the addition can feel like it was always part of the original landscape design.

this is one of the reasons i often prefer pavers over poured concrete for driveways, patios, walkways, and other hardscaping projects. concrete is a more permanent material, which can be a good thing, but it also means it’s much harder to make changes later. you can’t easily add onto an existing concrete driveway and have it look seamless, and when concrete cracks or settles, repairing it can be difficult without replacing a much larger area.

with a properly installed paver driveway, there’s also the ability to make repairs over time. individual pavers can be removed and replaced if necessary, and areas that settle can often be corrected by addressing the base underneath. that kind of long-term adjustability is something i really value when we’re designing outdoor spaces for our clients.

good landscape design isn’t just about how something looks on the day we finish it. we’re always thinking about how a space will function, age, and change over the years. choosing materials that can be maintained and adjusted is a big part of that.
